Final Restoration Plans Announced for Louisiana, Alabama

The Interior Department today announced the availability of the Final Phase 2 Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment #7.1: Terrebonne HNC Island Restoration Project and Finding of Significant Impact, which was prepared by federal and state natural resource trustee agencies for the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group.  The project will restore and conserve bird nesting and foraging habitat and create, restore, and enhance barrier and coastal islands and headlines by increasing the island’s acreage from 27.6 acres to ~45 acres of shrub nesting, ground nesting, and marsh habitat.

DOI also recently announced the availability of the Final Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge Recreation Enhancements: Supplemental Restoration Plan, which was prepared by federal and state natural resource trustee agencies for the Alabama Trustee Implementation Group.  The plan will provide ~$2 million in additional funding for the reconstruction of the Mobile Street Boardwalk at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.

Lastly, NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service also recently announced the availability of a Final Phase II Restoration Plan #3.2: Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, which was prepared by federal and state natural resource trustee agencies for the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group.  The plan allows for the controlled release of water, sediment, and nutrients from the Mississippi River into the Barataria Basin estuary.
