White House Announces Release of 2022-2026 Arctic Research Plan

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy today announced the release of the 2022-2026 Arctic Research Plan, which it referred to as a “bold strategy to understand a changing Arctic.”

The Plan, which will be implemented through biennial implementation plans that identify specific objectives and deliverables, includes the following four priority areas and related goals: community resilience and health; Arctic systems interactions; sustainable economies and livelihoods; and risk management and hazard mitigation.  The first implementation plan will be released in Fall 2022.

Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee Executive Director Dr. Larry Hinzman said that the Plan “supports integrated, knowledge-based action to address the needs of Arctic communities and improve understanding of the impacts of Arctic change on the entire planet,” with OSTP Deputy Director for Climate and Environment Dr. Jane Lubchenco stating that “[t]he knowledge to support a sustained, ambitious, and collective response to climate change has never been more necessary or urgent” and that the Plan “outlines important steps for the federal government to obtain the information that will enable effective response to the rapid social, environmental, cultural, and geopolitical changes happening in the Arctic.”
