USDA Announces Tariff Relief for Seafood Industry

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture today announced the availability of ~$530 million in assistance for the U.S. seafood industry and fisherman affected by retaliatory tariffs imposed by foreign governments.  The relief signup window is Sept. 14 – Dec. 14, and funding will be provided through the Seafood Trade Relief Program and funded by USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation.

The program will support those in the industry engaged in trade of Atka mackerel, Dungeness, King, Snow, and Southern Tanner crab, flounder, geoduck, goosefish, herrings, lobster, Pacific cod, Pacific ocean perch, pollock, sablefish, salmon, sole, squid, tuna, and turbot.

In announcing the program, Agriculture Sec. Sonny Perdue said in part that the United States “will no longer tolerate unfair trade practices” and that the program “ensures fishermen and other U.S. producers will not stand alone in facing unjustified retaliatory tariffs…”
