NOAA Announces Cloud and Data Strategies

NOAA today announced the release of Cloud and Data strategies that the agency called “integral to…dramatically expand[ing] emerging science and technology that will drive innovation and guide transformative advancements in NOAA’s science, products and services.”

NOAA said that the Data strategy will help improve the management and overall value of the agency’s data, noting that it codifies existing environmental data management directives and ensures alignment with the Federal Data Strategy.  It added that the Cloud Strategy is aligned with the Federal Cloud Strategy and builds on NOAA’s experience with cloud services to provide “a common vision and guide” for cloud initiatives and seeks to accelerate innovation in Artificial Intelligence and ‘Omics, among other things.

Acting NOAA Administrator Neil Jacobs said that the strategies “provide a guide to address emerging science and technology, and ultimately help accelerate NOAA’s mission and further increase the value of our data.” He further noted that “[a]ligning NOAA’s capabilities with the constantly evolving needs of our stakeholders requires both collaboration and partnerships to deliver data and services in a way that stakeholders expect to consume them, adding that “[c]reative partnerships with commercial cloud providers set NOAA apart from others in making more of its data publicly accessible.”

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Kelvin Droegemeier said that the administration “is constantly working to advance science and technology innovation, and that includes the NOAA Cloud and Data strategies,” adding that “[w]ith this update, NOAA will modernize how users are able to access and use data.”
