The Coast Guard today announced the availability of the Seacoast of North Carolina Port Access Route Study, which examined existing shipping routes and waterway uses to evaluate the need for establishing or changing existing vessel routing measures.
Study recommendations include establishment of two Cape Fear Approach Connector Fairways and the Beaufort Inlet Connector Fairway, as well as the submission of a proposal to the International Maritime Organization to create a precautionary area offshore from the entrance to the Cape Fear River at the terminus of the Traffic Separation Scheme.
The study will be submitted to the Coast Guard’s Office of Navigation Systems for consideration and to inform the Coast Guard’s ongoing efforts to establish shipping safety fairways along the Atlantic Coast.
