California Establishes 30×30 Conservation Goal

In an Executive Order on climate and biodiversity issued today, California Governor Gavin Newsom committed his state to a goal of conserving at least 30% of its land and coastal waters by 2030 (“30×30”).  In making the announcement, California billed itself as the first state in the nation to make the 30×30 pledge.

Strategies for achieving the goal are due by Feb. 1, 2022, and the goal is directed to be met in a manner that safeguards economic sustainability and food security; protects and restores biodiversity; enables enduring conservation measures on a broad range of landscapes in partnership with land managers and natural resource user groups; builds climate resilience, reduces risk from extreme climate events, and contributes to California’s efforts to combat climate change; and expands equitable outdoor access and recreation.
