President Trump today issued a Presidential Proclamation proclaiming May 22, 2025 as National Maritime Day. The Proclamation notes the importance of shipping lanes, the U.S. Merchant Marine, and skilled merchant mariners “who support our economy and readiness in times of peace, crisis, and war,” adding that the country “is a proud maritime nation, and as President, I am brining a renewed focus to reestablishing our dominance at sea.”
In doing so, the Proclamation notes the recent Executive Order on Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance, adding that investment in American shipbuilding, elimination of outdated regulations, and expansion of merchant mariner training and education “are critical to securing supply chains, protecting key trade routes, and countering growing threats from foreign adversaries.”
