The Interior Department today announced the issuance of the nation’s first gloating offshore wind research lease for an area covering ~15,000 acres of federal waters off Maine. The project could deploy up to 12 floating offshore wind turbines that generate up to 144 megawatts of energy.
Interior Sec. Deb Haaland called the announcement “yet another step toward our ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030,” with Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director Elizabeth Klein noting that the lease is “another example of a successful all-of-government effort to reach the Administration’s offshore wind energy goals and to combat the impacts of climate change.”
