The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy today highlighted the participation of OSTP Director and Assistant to the President for Science and Technology Arati Prabhakar at the Group of Seven (G7) Science and Technology Ministerial Meeting held in Italy July 9-11.
In doing so, it noted the G7 Science and Technology Ministers’ Meeting Communique that resulted, which includes a section focused on “Seas, Ocean, and their Biodiversity.” The section underscores the importance of ocean observing in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and natural disasters, as well as the need to fill data and research gaps and strengthen global partnerships and infrastructure.
Among other things, the Communique specifically calls for supporting the measurement of natural capital accounts and the implementation of the System of Environmental Economic Accounting, and expressly supports implementation of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and related Ocean Decade Vision 2030.
