The Coast Guard is currently seeking comments by Thursday, Apr. 27 on its evaluation of the adequacy of existing vessel routing measures and the need for additional routing measures for port approaches to Galveston Bay and Sabine Pass, TX and Calcasieu Pass, LA, and international and domestic transit areas in the 8th Coast Guard District area of responsibility. Originally due Apr. 17, the comment deadline was later extended to due to publication of an incorrect contact number in the original announcement.
The Coast Guard noted that the Port Access Route Study will consider whether existing or additional routing measures are needed to improve navigation safety due to factors like planned or potential wind energy development, current port capabilities and planning improvements, increased vessel traffic, changing vessel traffic patterns, weather conditions, or navigational difficulty.
The Coast Guard intends to hold public meetings at various locations as the study process continues. Recommendations from the study may later be implemented through rulemakings or in accordance with international agreements.
