The Ocean Policy Committee today released a 2022-2023 Action Plan to guide its actions through the end of next year.
The Action Plan includes a series of actions, including the following:
- Development of National Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (formal notice for public input planned for Summer 2022);
- Development of Ocean-Climate Action Plan that includes assessment of mitigation and adaptation activities in green shipping, blue carbon, biodiversity conservation and protection, and marine renewable energy, and agency action targets and timelines;
- Identification and advancement of best practices for intergovernmental consultation and engagement in ocean use planning and authorizations;
- Continued stakeholder engagement on enhancing existing spatial data tools and identification of new information and gaps on ocean uses and ecosystems;
- Development of best practices for engaging Environmental Justice communities; and
- Building new and strengthening existing partnerships with federal and non-federal stakeholders to improve the ocean science and technology enterprise
The interagency Ocean Policy Committee was established in 2018 to coordinate federal actions on ocean-related matters, and was codified into law under the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act.
