BOEM Announces EIS Notice of Intent for MA, VA Offshore Wind Projects

The Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management on Wednesday announced that it is seeking comments by Friday, July 30 on its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement analyzing the potential impacts of Vineyard Wind’s Construction & Operations Plan (Plan).

The Plan involves the construction and operation of up to 130 wind turbines, two to five offshore substations, inter-array cables, and up to three offshore substations with up to five export cables connecting to the onshore electric grid in Barnstable County, MA.

BOEM Director Amanda Lefton said that “[b]y moving forward on this environmental review, we are making progress toward confronting climate change, creating good-paying jobs, and beginning the Nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future.”

Also, BOEM today announced that it is seeking comments by Monday, Aug. 2 on its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement analyzing the potential impacts of Dominion Energy’s Construction & Operations Plan (Plan).

The Plan involves the construction and operation of up to 205 wind turbine generators and associated foundations, up to three offshore substations, up to ~301 miles of inter-array cables, and up to two cable onshore landing locations.

Interior Sec. Deb Haaland said that “[r]ecent technological advances, falling costs, and tremendous economic potential make offshore wind a promising avenue for diversifying our national energy portfolio, creating good-paying union jobs, and tackling climate change,” while BOEM Director Amanda Lefton said that, if approved, the project “will represent another step forward to help the United States leverage existing manufacturing and workforce capabilities to grow a network of domestic suppliers.”
