Environment America today announced the release of a new report on “New Life for the Ocean: How Marine Protections Keep Our Waters Wild.” Conducted by the organization’s Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group, the study includes recommendations that, among other things, call on the federal and state governments to adopt goals to protect at least 30% of their oceans (including 30% of every major geographic region), with a call to place protections in “all key regions” in the U.S. to “ensure that representative examples of the diverse habitats and ecosystems in U.S. waters are protected.”
Additionally, the report calls for ecologically linking marine protected areas in regional networks, implementing fully protected areas in nearshore waters, and developing comprehensive management plans for marine protected areas and MPA networks.
