National Marine Fisheries Service Deputy Assistant Admin. for Operations Paul Doremus today highlighted the work of the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee, including its recent meeting that included completion of reports on seafood marketing and promotion and potential impacts of offshore wind development, sharing of experiences regarding COVID and impacts on fishermen and the industry, and endorsement of the Seafood Trade Task Force.
Doremus also highlighted their recommendations for the reestablishment of an industry-led National Seafood Council to help increase U.S. seafood consumption and improving planning and coordination of offshore wind, as well as their outlining of near-term fisheries needs. Doremus said that NMFS will review and consider the Committee recommendations over the coming months
He also said that the Committee’s recommendations “are particularly timely given the broad impact of COVID-19 on the seafood industry, and the widespread support that MAFAC heard from industry and other stakeholders that precompetitive collaboration on seafood marketing and promotion is essential for the industry to recover and become more resilient over time.”
