NOAA, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Marc and Lynne Benioff today announced the award of ~$2.6 million in five grants to support the management and conservation of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo called the project “a transformational opportunity to invest in and help protect this sacred Native Hawaiian landscape.”
The grant awards will be used to help reduce marine debris, protect the monument from invasive algae, assess management options for species at risk from sea-level rise, and develop a resiliency strategy to maintain ecosystems.
NOAA has also announced a $3.7 million, 3-year award to support the management of national marine sanctuaries and marine monuments through better understanding of climate variability and change in the sanctuary system.
