The Interior Dept. today announced the issuance of a joint Record of Decision on the South Fork Wind proposed wind energy project off Rhode Island. The decision was formally published on Nov. 30.
The wind project includes up to 12 wind turbine generators with a nameplate capacity of 6-12 megawatts per turbine, submarine cables between the generators, and an offshore substation. The facility would connect to the existing mainland electric grid in East Hampton, NY.
Commenting on the announcement, Interior Sec. Deb Haaland said that “[w]e have no time to waste in cultivating and investing in a clean energy economy that can sustain us for generations,” calling the news “one of many actions we are taking in pursuit of the President’s goal to open the doors of economic opportunity to more Americans.”
Principal Deputy Asst. Interior Secretary for Land and Mineral Management Laura Daniel-Davis said that achieving the administration’s goal to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030 “can result in the creation of tens of thousands of good-paying union jobs across the country, as America moves to ramp up domestic supply chains for all aspects of offshore renewable energy development” and that the action “will help us meet our goals for sustainable economies, clean energy, and climate resilience.”
