The Interior Department’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement today announced a joint funding opportunity with the U.S. Department of Energy for up to $40 million over 5 years for the operation and maintenance of the Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI) in order to support further improvements in offshore energy safety and environmental sustainability. “OESI 2.0” will expand the scope of the original program to include offshore renewable energy.
BSEE Director Scott Angelle said called the new effort “the latest strategic and targeted initiative which will benefit America for years to come” and “ensure offshore energy exploration and production remain safe and environmentally sustainable.”
Deputy Energy Secretary Mark Menezes said that “[t]hrough federal collaboration and a cross-sector approach, we can increase support for offshore energy production while protecting our workers and the marine environment.”
