The Council on Environmental Quality today published a summary of a Sept. 29 meeting held by the Ocean Policy Committee, facilitated by Committee Co-Chairs Mary Neumayr (Council on Environmental Quality Chairman) and Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier (Office of Science and Technology Policy Director).
The meeting included updates on implementation of the November 2019 Presidential Memorandum on Ocean Mapping of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone and the Shoreline and Nearshore of Alaska, including updates from National Ocean Mapping, Exploration, and Characterization Council (NOMEC) Co-Chair Dr. John Haines (U.S. Geological Survey), Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere Tim Gallaudet, and Ocean Resource Management Subcommittee Co-Chair Karnig Ohannessian (U.S. Navy).
The meeting also included updates on the National Oceanographic Partnership Program including funding levels and federal ocean science and technology priorities) and a recent Presidential Proclamation making it official policy for the United States to exercise its right to regulate, authorize, and conduct marine scientific research, with a specific requirement to authorize, in advance, all instances of foreign marine scientific research, in the United States EEZ and on its continental shelf to the extent permitted under international law.
