NOAA today announced its accession as a principal member of the Maritime Domain Awareness Executive Steering Committee, which it tasked with implementing the National Strategy for Maritime Security and Presidential Policy Directive 13: Maritime Security.
Along with NOAA, the State Department joined as well, marking the Committee’s first expansion since its establishment in 2010. Other members include representatives of the Defense, Transportation, and Homeland Security Departments and the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office.
In announcing the membership, Assistant Sec. of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Deputy NOAA Admin. Tim Gallaudet said that “NOAA’s expertise in countering illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, as well as big-data analytics, charting, exploration, and ocean and weather observations will be a valuable addition to the committee’s work.”
