White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Kelvin Droegemeier today issued a Memorandum to Executive Departments and Agencies outlining FY 2022 R&D budget priorities and cross-cutting actions.
“American Energy and Environmental Leadership” is one of five R&D budget priorities. In that section, the Memorandum identifies “understanding our unexplored ocean and expanding use of ocean data” and the Arctic as priorities “that will enhance the Nation’s economic vitality, national security, and environmental quality and are critical to the well-being and prosperity of all Americans.”
Additionally, the Memorandum calls on federal entities to continue to prioritize new and emerging technologies and collaborative approaches for mapping, exploring, and characterizing resources in U.S. waters, focus on increasing capacity to successfully manage large amounts of ocean data and make such data available to the government and stakeholders, prioritize R&D that improves understanding of and supports effective responses to changes in the ocean, and prioritize research investments that enhance the capacity to observe, understand, and predict physical biological, and socioeconomic processes of the Arctic.
