NOAA Announces Ocean and Coastal Observation Funding Investment

NOAA today announced its decision to invest $14 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding in the eleven Regional Associations across the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System, noting that the funds will be used to “modernize and recapitalize” ocean observing assets, networks, and communications systems.

Commerce Sec. Gina Raimondo noted the administration’s commitment to “ensuring that the United States remains on the cutting edge of oceanic and freshwater research and observation,” stating that high quality environmental data “allows decision makers across the public and private sector to prepare for severe weather events, protect against the damaging effects of climate change, and bolster coastal economies.”

NOAA Admin. Dr. Rick Spinrad added that the investment “will better equip our community partners to provide the highest quality ocean data and intelligence to enhance a sustainable New Blue Economy.”
